Principality of Monaco Special Edition
This is a little known, limited edition automobile that only a crazed Ford nut or Thunderbird aficionado might be aware Ford ever offered. Only 2,000 of these unique cars were built. There are less than 9 still known to exist.
The first car was presented to Prince Rainier and was rumored to have a color scheme and interior touches suggested by Princess Grace, inspiring the "Princess Grace model" nickname among salesmen.
Each was built in "Corinthian White" with white leather or vinyl bucket seats, a white steering wheel, and "Dark Rose" colored long grain vinyl tops. Other features included special spinner hubcaps, gold piping on the seats, gold inserts on the hubcaps and the rim of the steering wheel. Additionally, each car displayed the "S" landau bar on the side of the hardtop, along with a special badge emblazoned with the Crest of Monaco on the dash, detailing the production number (1 to 2,000).
The Princess of Monaco was also fitted with simulated rosewood accents on both the door and dash panels (instead of Walnut or ribbed metal of the convertible). This special model cost $200 more than the standard Thunderbird and had a base price of $4,748. 1963 Thunderbirds all came standard with a single exhaust 390/300 h.p. "Z" Code V8 but a few were equipped with the "Thunderbird Special" dual exhaust and larger Holley Carb which produced 330 h.p. (also trim stamped 'Z' Code).
